Kray twin paintings fetch £17,000

A painting by Reggie Kray, painted during a prison art class

Nine artworks painted by the Kray twins in prison have been sold for a total of £17,125 - triple their estimate.

Ronnie and Reggie Kray, who ran a gang in London's East End in the 1950s and 1960s, were both jailed for life for murder in 1969.
The works were painted during the 1970s when the pair were in Parkhurst Prison on the Isle Of Wight.

Auctioneer Christine Smith said: "The Krays were the last of their kind and known all over the world."
The four landscapes by Ronnie are rural scenes featuring a small, white cottage.
One of four by Reggie, including a picture of two men dressed in black top hat and tails, walking past a white picket fence, sold for £2,110.

The two posts of the fence are both inscribed with the letter R.

The works had a listed price of between £500-800.
A portrait of the twins up for sale signed by G Young, believed to be poisoner Graham Young who murdered his stepmother and two work colleagues, was bought for £3,105.
Ronnie Kray died in prison in 1995, aged 61.

Reggie Kray was eventually released from prison in 2000, aged 66, because of his deteriorating health and died shortly afterwards.

The works were purchased by phone bidders.
A spokesman for the auctioneers said: "This was a very popular and successful sale and the paintings went for triple their estimates in many cases.

"The lady who sold them is thrilled."
Andover's Hampshire Auctions sold the paintings and other memorabilia.
